TerreStar Networks Success Story

Situation Analysis

TerreStar Networks is building North America's first integrated satellite and terrestrial communications network providing mobile communications on commercially available devices over a next generation all IP-based network. With the launch of its first satellite, TerreStar plans to provide ubiquitous North American service with coverage in the continental United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, Hawaii and Alaska.

"TerreStar plans to be the first to offer the power and flexibility of an IPenabled network in a mobile environment," said Dennis Matheson, CTO, TerreStar Networks. "By working with EB, we developed an environment where design creativity offers limitless possibilities; enabling mobile devices to leverage nextgeneration services while transitioning seamlessly, and bidirectionally between terrestrial and satellite modes."

By offering seamless connectivity between the satellite and next generationwireless network and enabling users to be reliably and securely connected, TerreStar's solution expects to help solve the critical communication and business continuity challenges faced by our nation's homeland defence, public safety and rural communities, as well as enterprise customers and revolutionize how North America stays connected.

During design and development of its integrated network, TerreStar identified the need for feature-rich, robust, sleek form factor devices that could seamlessly operate across the mixed satellite-terrestrial environment.

Enter EB

TerreStar and EB have joined forces to develop innovative reference designs for integrated satellite-terrestrial networks. EB and TerreStar will bring to market the world's only quad-band GSM and tri-band WCDMA/HSPA smartphone reference design with integrated satellite-terrestrial voice and data capabilities. This is just one of many firsts from the family of EB-TerreStar satelliteterrestrial IP-enabled handset reference designs, which also marks the first:

  • Fully IP-based satellite smartphone reference design using high speed packet data;
  • Satellite-terrestrial smartphone reference design with a touch screen and a full QWERTY keyboard, that fits in one's pocket.

Embedded with an integrated satellite-terrestrial chipset, the reference device will allow users to connect seamlessly – and transparently – to both the satellite and ter-restrial components of the TerreStar network. Similar in size to today's PDAs, the handset reference design will include advanced features, such as: Microsoft® Windows™ Mobile operating system and competitive service offerings, including SMS, MMS, Email and Push to Talk.

Customer Commitment

EB enables customers to turn next-generation wireless technologies into the most exciting end-user experiences. The first reference designs will be made available to TerreStar in its existing form factor. Device manufacturers also can work directly with EB and TerreStar to customize mobile devices based on target market requirements.
