EB Dirigo combines EB street director 8, EB GUIDE 5, EB GUIDE Speech Target Framework (STF), and EB Assist Traffic Sign Assistant (TSA) and the core assets car connectivity gateway and EB’s cloud.
EB Dirigo is our first product that runs on an Android platform. EB Dirigo runs on approx. 3000 different Android devices, which have to be verified. The navigation solution is based on non-commercial map data, that is to say OpenStreetMap (OSM). The quality of the map material differs strongly between regions. EB had to define its own usability standards and quality levels for an app. The project included the initial set-up of the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud. Also, 24/7 server availability was required. Traffic sign recognition via the smartphone camera is only partially reliable and depends on the quality of the camera and the lighting conditions. Thus, it was a challenge to validate the recognized traffic signs. The EB Dirigo project involved numerous teams from different domains and different EB branch offices.
EB categorized and prioritized the Android devices in a manageable way. Map data is steadily improved and automatic tests were set up. EB has built its own map compiler to process the OSM data.
EB conducted extensive usability studies and continuously improved the app and the web portal in the process. EB built up AWS know-how and set up EB’s cloud. To validate traffic signs, EB chose a heuristic approach: EB developed algorithms which merge traffic sign camera data, available map data, and sensor data to get the most probable traffic regulations. To consolidate roles, responsibilities and stand-by readiness, EB has established various agile teams and linked them via a scaled agile framework.
