Bridging the gap between vehicle functions and infotainment for Volkswagen

The challenge

The Volkswagen Group required a robust, cross-platform middleware solution to bridge the gap between complex vehicle functions—such as charging management, climate control, and interior lighting—and the user interface. This involved managing the infotainment standard software for Linux and QNX systems, as well as developing the standard software for a brand-new Android-based infotainment architecture.

The core challenge was ensuring seamless communication via REST interfaces and VW’s data exchange protocol across diverse brands, including VW, Škoda, and Chinese joint ventures (SVW/FAW).

Constraints:

  • High complexity: Supporting three vehicle platform generations, each with multiple hardware variants and distinct brand requirements.
  • Legacy and integration: Taking over a running project required rapidly mastering existing build chains and third-party dependencies.
  • Greenfield Android development: For the project, Elektrobit had to establish new delivery chains from scratch while integrating with a new OEM partner and Android’s Vehicle Hardware Abstraction Layer (VHAL).

The solution

Elektrobit deployed its deep automotive expertise to stabilize and evolve the middleware stack. We proactively identified and resolved conceptual flaws within specifications and existing components. For the new Android platform, we provided end-to-end support—from defining technical concepts and reviewing architectural designs to assisting with seamless software integration.

Benefits:

  • Resolution of fault clusters: Systemic issues were analyzed and neutralized, leading to a significant increase in software stability.
  • Reduced time-to-market: By leveraging experience from previous VW standard software iterations, Elektrobit delivered functional car features on the new Android platform faster than an unexperienced partner could have achieved.
  • Proactive risk management: Potential problems were identified and solved before they could impact the project timeline, earning direct praise from VW project leadership.

Elektrobit’s added value

Elektrobit acted as more than just a software provider; we served as a strategic consultant and integration partner. Beyond delivering high-quality code on time, we:

  • Identified and flagged critical issues in surrounding third-party components that would have otherwise gone unnoticed.
  • Fostered a transparent, collaborative environment across a complex web of stakeholders.
  • Utilized years of domain-specific knowledge to provide “shortcut” solutions, ensuring that both legacy and future-gen systems function reliably under one cohesive ecosystem.

Statement by Martin Feder, VW Sudivision Manager

The Elektrobit Project Manager has the technical background knowledge and can also answer all critical questions. This is key for me! Together with the high reliability and the high delivered quality, these are the reasons why I work with Elektrobit.
